Warframe celebrates its 11th year in the games industry as a successful free-to-play game with the release of its major expansion, Whispers in the Walls. Ever since the game’s release in 2013, Warframe has seen many console ports throughout the years, from Playstation 4 and Xbox One to the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X. Recently, Digital Extremes has ported the game to Switch, and there is news of an upcoming mobile port. In 2022, after the console ports had been released, Digital Extremes launched the Cross-Play function for all consoles, connecting Tenno from different platforms together and merging the population into a single server per region.
With the game becoming multiplatform, Warframe fans have been clamoring for a cross-save feature since it received many of its console ports. However, it did not receive that functionality for a long time, and players have been pigeonholed into staying with the platform with the most progression. The game has previously conducted very limited-time account linking events, but it was sporadic, and Digital Extremes made it difficult to notify players when this limited service would drop. Last year, Digital Extremes promised that when Whispers in the Walls launches, cross-save functionality will go live for all players. Now, with the release of the expansion, the studio has expressed to fans that they will fine-tune cross-save functionality to ensure the stability of their servers and make the transition seamless.
Last year, in December, DE gave players the opportunity to use this functionality for a day. The studio reported that over 100,000 players have successfully linked their accounts, but their servers have started to break down from the strain. DE Megan, community manager for Warframe, posted on the official Warframe forums that the full release for cross-save will be sometime in January, so expect this feature to be released anytime this month.
Why Did It Take So Long?
Digital Extremes noted that they needed time to ensure that cross-save would not break the game or drastically affect a player’s account if they released it early. DE originally provided an account migration option for Founders, but it was released in a buggy state, Since progression is very important in Warframe, DE did not want to risk accidentally breaking their players’ accounts. Now, DE is ironing out the feature to allow for a more stable and user-friendly experience.
How To Access Cross-Save
If you wish to link your accounts, go to the Warframe website and log in with your main account. Remember to assign the account with the most progression, items, Platinum, etc., as the main account. Once you have logged in, go to your account page. On that page, there will be a banner at the top of the page for cross save. Click on “Connect Account,” and it will show you the different platforms. When picking a platform to link your account with, the site will redirect you to the platform’s own login screen. After logging in with your platform’s account, the site will show you the assigned primary account and the platform to which you wish to copy your save. Be aware that once you have your cross-save ported to that platform, the progression and items in that platform will be overridden.
