What is Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis

Rather than be a proper sequel Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is simply another version of Phantasy Star Online 2. The original is still active, but New Genesis is where it’s at. There is even an incentive for those playing the older version of New Genesis. While both games have the same core mechanics, New Genesis has improved graphics, more quality-of-life features, and a slightly different approach to combat. 

In New Genesis, players are known as the Meteorn, people that crashland on Halpha, a planet that has been besieged by DOLLS, mysterious cosmic entities that have been besieging Halpha. Gifted with extraordinary power, the Meteorn takes it upon themselves to defend their new home from the DOLLS, and perhaps the even more sinister cosmic powers that be behind them. 

The Meteorn channel their special abilities with the class of their choice, of which there are six: the melee and offense and defense-balanced Hunter, the fast close-quarters Fighter, and the mid-range dual pistol-toting Gunner. Then there is also the adept Ranger that serves as ranged DPS and support, the Force that uses Techs, a stand-in for magic, and the premier support Techter, which not only uses Techs to heal and buff allies but also keep enemies at bay. 

The Meteorn is represented by a diverse set of races: the Human, the Newman, the mecha-like CAST, and the Deuman. Lore aside, these races do not have many advantages over the others, nor do they have disadvantages. Players only choose for lore-related or aesthetic reasons. As for the latter, players can choose from a limited set of qualities from another race but still be counted as the race of their choice. 

While they already have potential right from the start, the Meteorn have to level up to unlock them further. As more of Halpha is revealed in further updates, the higher the levels the Meteorn can achieve. On top of that, their natural abilities have to be compounded with the proper gear. Thankfully, in PSO2 New Genesis, there are only weapons and three pieces of armor, called units. Players can either farm them or purchase them using NGS Mesetas.

Unfortunately, like what’s been previously said, not every player has the time and energy to constantly play Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis. Maintaining a consistently high amount of mesetas isn’t easy, and farming good gear can be RNG-reliant.
